Skyhigh Workshops ~  Satisfying & Fun

Giant Masks
& Parade Puppets
Kootenay Kids Workshop ~ One of their Giant Mask creations

This workshop is designed for younger children and is fun for all ages.  It requires no previous experience with masks or parade puppets.    After some discussion and exploration, the children sketch their mask ideas and then create a simple card paper mask or puppet using their sketches as a guide.  In the last part of the workshop the children will 'wear' their masks and perform for their peers or any onsite groups

Minimum Time Required: 2 Hours
Age Group:
Pre School and up

Creating Parade Wearables
My talented and good humoured husband building me a 'jeep' parade wearable. David does all the giant construction work . . . (as well as all the gardening)

Wearables are often simple in construction, something like an elaborate signboard.  In this workshop, a whole group can be magically transformed into an infinite number of things, like birds, cars, flowers, bugs, aliens or people.  The first session will consist of a few games, discussion about wearables, collective brainstorming and will culminate with a group design plan.  In the second session, most of the building and painting will occur.  This workshop can be done in one or two sessions ~ whatever works for your group or classroom!

Minimum Time Required: 4 Hours
Age Group: 6 - Adult

This workshop is a quick and satisfying introduction to Toy Theatre.  When this workshop is complete, each participant will have a small toy theatre.  I begin with an introduction to toy theatres ( there is an exciting revival of this medium in North America).  Each person creates a brief narrative with illustrations of the setting and characters in their show.  They build their own simple puppets from paper, odds and ends and cardboard.  The workshop ends with a 'mini showcase'.  When it is over everyone will leave with his or her own toy theatre show to be performed at home, in the classroom, church, etc.

Minimum Time Required: 4 Hours
Age Group: 6 -12 or 12 - Adult

 Hand Puppets
Custom made puppets by Nicola Perrin Finch

Skyhigh Hand Puppet Workshops are great for kids or grown ups! You'll make your own puppets in this workshop;  build sock puppets, bag puppets, glove puppets, shadow puppets, marionettes, rod puppets, puppets from stuffed toys and more . . . Hand puppets are wonderful as teaching tools, toys or handmade gifts.

Besides making your own puppets in the course of the workshop, you'll leave with excellent resources ~ internet links to free patterns and websites that will delight and inspire you.

Giant Puppetry
Giant Storyteller Parade Puppet with kids in local parade

This workshop focuses on learning about and building a giant puppet.  This workshop combines papier-mâché, cardboard sculpting, costuming and painting to create a giant celebration puppet.  First an introduction to giant puppets, then the group will brainstorm visual images to be used in their puppet which will be designed to represent their group.  After building the puppet, the group will learn the basics of operating their own giant.

Minimum Time Required: 4 - 6 Hours
Age Group: 12 and up
Maximum number of participants: 15
